General Information : The Department of Horticultural Sciences at Suleyman Demirel University was founded in 1993 in Atabey/Isparta. In 2000, the department has been moved to a new building at Çünür campus of Suleyman Demirel University. The mission of the department is; (a) to improve the productivity, value, and use of horticultural crops; (b) to educate students. BSc and MSc degrees have been offered in the Department since 1993. In 2004 the department has started the PhD program. Educational and research studies at the department have focused mainly on the production, breeding, genetic improvement, physiology, post harvest physiology and storage of fruits, nuts, vegetables, grapevine, mushroom, flowers, and nursery crops. The department is conducting research projects with the objectives of solving national as well as regional plant production problems. The Department works closely with important horticultural crops for Isparta province, primarily apple and sweet cherry, vegetables (especially tomato) for fresh market and processing, greenhouse flower and bedding plants (especially carnation). The Horticultural Sciences program has one of the most modern postharvest physiology laboratries. On the other hand virus free plum and sweet cherry roothstocks are being produced on a commercial scale in the tissue culture laboratory in collaboration with field crops and plant protection departments. The cytology laboratory at the department serves as both research and studeteducational purposes. Two greenhouses of 880 m2 (glass) and 500 m2 plastic covered, and two high plastic tunnels are used for research and practice. Moreover, 300.000 M9 apple rootstocks and approximately 15.000 apple saplings are produced in collaboration with Isparta governership and private sector. The department offers technical support to certain firms in Turkey with regard to fruit nurseries, vegetable seed production and carnation production. Additionally our department has in its estern campus 115 da fruit, 30 da vegetable, 10 da vineyard collection used for student practices and internship. Moreover, the department has physiology, well equipped molecular biology and biotechnology laboratories and storage facilities, collections of fruit orchard and vineyard. The academic staff consists of 6 Professors, 1 associate professor, 9 assistant professor, 1 expert, 1 lecturer and 3 research assistants. There is a concentrated central library of Süleyman Demirel University which has many books and periodicals regarding horticultural crops in both Turkish and foreign languages and the library has subscriptions to many online journals. For education, projection machines and sometimes video are used. The Department also benefits from its close relations with local and foreign research institutes and universities. The department is also in collaboration (student and teacher Exchange) with Warshaw Agricultural University (Poland), University Catolica del sacro cuore (Italy) and Finland Agricultural University (Finland) under Erasmus/Socrates program. A total of 6 students and 4 academic staff can benefit from these exchange programs.  
Qualification Awarded : The Bachelor of Science degree in Horticultural Sciences with the title of Agricultural Engineer is awarded to students who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum.  
Level of Qualification : To be able to graduate from the department, 130 ± 10 credits must be earned, a graduation thesis must be conducted and 30 business day summer internship must be completed.  
Specific Admission Requirements : Students with a high school degree must take central placement examination (OYS) held by Higher Education Council (YOK). Those who pass the exam could qualify to register to Suleyman Demirel University. Enrollment deadlines and necessary documents for enrollment are announced by the office the president. Students who fail to enroll during the enrollment period lose their rights for enrollment.  
Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (formal, non-formal and informal) : In order to be accepted from a vocational school, student must pass the DGS exam and complete and succeed predetermined courses. Students follow rules specified in Official Gazette no 24676. Students who have started studies in other universities within or outside of the country may apply for their recognition and rules specified in Official Gazette number 17845 . The recognition record is unique for each student and therefore the procedure is carried out accordingly before the start of each academic year. Students who are currently enrolled different schools and programs of the university could transfer/enter other programs within the university. Transfer rules are set and monitored by the university senate.  
Qualification Requirements and Regulations : National qualifications frameworks may contain levels (or intermediate qualifications) within the three Bologna cycles (e.g. a short cycle within the first cycle). These levels allow institutions to structure a particular qualification and regulate progression through the qualification. Qualification Requirements and Regulations are enacted by YÖK (The Council Of Higher Education) in Turkey.  
Profile of The Programme : Aim of the program is to educate and graduate students who are knowledgeable and could participate and adapt national and international work conditions and who could recognize regional and national problems affecting agricultural productivity, analyze problems and offer solutions and transfer current knowledge and inform growers.  
Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples : The graduates of the department have many opportunities of employment in a variety of state and private companies such as; Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Forestry and Environment, research institutes, municipal offices, national and multinational agriculture companies and small businesses. Additionally, graduates can find a working area in the private sectors are such as the area of greenhouse, seed and seedling companies, pesticide seller, agricultural production and marketing companies.  
Access to Further Studies : Students who are enrolled in undergraduate programs and who fulfill necessary requirements may enroll to a minor program. Minor Program is not a separate degree program and it does not award a BS diploma. Students could enroll a second major program and receive a BS degree only if their first major program is close enough to chosen major program. Minor and major programs are set and regulated by the University Senate.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading : The Horticultural Sciences department follow these regulations. Each course is assessed via a midterm exam. Exam dates are announced by the office of the dean. Additional exams for internships, practices etc may be held. In order to enter final examination students must meet following requirements: 1. enrollment for the current semester 2. 70% attendance of courses 3. 80% attendance of practices 4. attendance of midterm exam The student is given a grade by the course instructor by taking into account the midterm examinations, final examinations, the semesters work and attendance. The Nominative Grade is found by adding forty percent of the average of the midterm exam and sixty percent of the final exam grade. This grade is accepted as crude grade. Then the average grade of the course for the whole class, distribution of grades and standard deviance of mean is calculated and transformed to letter and GPA grades. Students are accepted as successful if their GPA?s is at least 2.0 and if they do not have any courses graded (FF), (FD), (NA) or (K). Students whose GPA?s is under 2.0 fail. Failed students may retake courses with grades (DC) and (DD) if they obtain approval from department head and students advisor.  
Graduation Requirements : Education period of the field crop department is 4 years. If students can not graduate within specified time then they could extend their studies up to 3 more years according to Law 2547 regulation 44. Those who can not graduate at the end of 7 years and who are enrolled in senior class are awarded 2 exams, one of which is a make up exam, for all courses they failed to pass. At the end of this period, students who failed 3 courses or less are granted limitless time to enter failed courses. Those who failed 5 courses could continue to take exams up to 3 to 4 semester. In order to graduate from the department students must fulfill requirements of the department and the university and must obtain minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) 2.00. Students who graduate within 4 years with GPA between 3.00-3.49 are awarded achievement certificate and with GPA between 3.50-4.00 are awarded outstanding achievement certificate.  
Mode of Study (full-time, part-time, e-learning etc.) : Students must enroll as full time students to Agriculture Faculty and to departments.  

Program Learning Outcomes
1 Having extensive understanding and comprehension of horticultural plants;
Gains substantial knowledge and ability to grow, market and storage of fruits, vegetables, grapes and ornamental plants.
2 Being able to produce solutions to scientific problems in his/her area emerged while conducting above mentioned operations
3 Establishing and doing research on any subject faced during growing, marketing and storage of horticultural plants, to establish and manage projects to solve any problems emerged.
4 Being able to develop economical solutions to the horticultural problems by using available information and communication
5 In regards to problems of companies conducting business in the area of horticulture, gaining ability to:
-comprehend and describe the problems faced
-evaluate the resources
-produce alternative strategies for the solutions of problems faced
-identify the most suitable solution and solving the problems faced
6 Being able to establish professional communication with the public and with the societies in his profession by using verbal and written communication tools.
7 Following international scientific literature related to his/her area and attending scientific activities to improve his professional abilities.
8 Having ability to improve his knowledge, to develop new methods and technologies and conduct basic and applied research to develop new varieties.
9 Having ability to plan and develop projects and to apply and control the projects regarding horticultural businesses design and foundation, horticultural plant production and their harvest, storage, packaging and marketing.
