General Information : Department of Agricultural Biotechnology was established in 2010 under Süleyman Demirel University, Faculty of Agriculture. It consists of the Departments of Plant Biotechnology, Animal Biotechnology, Enzyme and Microbial Biotechnology. New developments in the area of molecular biology and genetics brought in new approaches to agricultural production and allowed biotechnological practices to be applied on agriculture. Traditional agricultural technologies are already inefficient for sustainable agricultural production for supplying the needs of rapidly growing human populations in a period in which environmental conditions growing more inhospitable for crop growth and development. Agricultural biotechnology represents new approaches and technologies for the changing and reforming agricultural practices. Department of Agricultural Biotechnology has a wide curriculum on the theory and applications of molecular biology and genetics, genomics and proteomics, molecular breeding, genetic transformation techniques and detecting genetically modified organisms, tissue culture techniques. The major objective of the program is to help the development of professionals who are capable of practice and develop bio-technologies for agricultural production.  
Qualification Awarded : Agricultural Engineer  
Level of Qualification : First Cycle (Bachelor?s Degree).Plant Protection program is subjected to 240 ECTS credits and sixth stage degree system in higher education.  
Specific Admission Requirements : Candidates successfully passing the centralized examination conducted by Turkish Higher Education Council Student Selection and Placement Center and earn the right to be placed in the Faculties and Vocational Schools of Süleyman Demirel University has to register with documents determined by the Rectorate within the time period declared by Rectorate. Candidates who are not registered during the announced registration period will lose their right to register.  
Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (formal, non-formal and informal) : Horizontal transfer from the other higher education institutions to Academic units affiliated to Süleyman Demirel University is made according to the provisions of ?Principles Concerning the Regulation of the Undergraduate Transfer among Higher Education Institutions " dated 21.10.1982 published in Official Gazette No. 17845th. Applications for the transfer students will be reviewed and finalized by the administrative council. Education period of the horizontally transferred students will be determined by taking the educational period completed in the previous institution into account and considering that the total education period does not exceed the maximum educational period specified by law. Vertical transfer of the graduates of vocational schools to undergraduate programs affiliated with Süleyman Demirel University is made according to the provisions of ?Principles Concerning the Regulation of continuation of graduates of associated degree programs of Distance Education and Vocational Schools to the Undergraduate Education ? dated 19.02.2002 published in Official Gazette No. 24676th by the administrative council of the Faculties.
 
Qualification Requirements and Regulations : National qualifications frameworks may contain levels (or intermediate qualifications) within the three Bologna cycles (e.g. a short cycle within the first cycle). These levels allow institutions to structure a particular qualification and regulate progression through the qualification. Qualification Requirements and Regulations are enacted by YÖK (The Council Of Higher Education) in Turkey.  
Profile of The Programme : The main objectives of the program include providing education and research experience for the students who are needed by both state and private organisations and preparing students having research interest for postgraduate education.  
Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples : Agricultural engineers graduated from the Department of Agricultural Biotechnology have many opportunities of employment in a variety of agencies and companies from both state and private sector such as; Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Forestry and Environment, Ministry of Public Works and Settlement, research institutes, municipal offices, national and multinational agriculture and biotechnology companies as well as research universities.  
Access to Further Studies : Students who are enrolled in undergraduate programs and who fulfill the necessary requirements may enroll to a minor program providing a certificate in addition to the major program. Minor Program does not mean a separate degree program. Students may also enroll to double major program providing a second BS degree from a program with the curriculum similar to their major program. Minor and double major programs are regulated by directives set by the University Senate.  
Aims Of Programme : - Providing education on agricultural biotechnology and increasing the number of qualified researchers needed by the sector working mainly on molecular diagnostics and detection of genetically modified organisms.
- Conducting research on basic and applied biotechnology and providing solutions for national agricultural problems.
- Encouraging interdiciplinary studies mainly with researchers working on agricultural production.
- Improving academy-industry cooperation by conducting research on industry oriented projects.
- Raise awareness on food safety in the society and contribute policymaking.
- Providing support for national and international student/researcher collobartation and exchange programs.
 
Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading : For each course, at least one midterm examination is given during the semester and also students must take a final examination at the end of the semester/year.
Students of Plant Protection programs follow these regulations. Each course is assessed via a midterm exam. Exam dates are announced by the office of the dean. Additional exams for internships, practices etc may be held. In order to enter final examination students must meet following requirements:
1. Enrollment for the current semester
2. %70 attendance of courses
3. %80 attendance of practices
4. Attendance of midterm exam
The student is given a grade by the course instructor by taking into account the midterm examinations, final examinations, the semesters work and attendance. The Nominative Grade is found by adding forty percent of the average of the midterm exam and sixty percent of the final exam grade. This grade is accepted as crude grade. Then the average grade of the course for the whole class, distribution of grades and standard deviance of mean is calculated and transformed to letter and GPA grades.
Students are accepted as successful if their GPA?s is at least 2.0 and if they do not have any courses graded (FF), (FD), (NA) or (K). Students whose GPA?s is under 2.0 fail. Failed students may retake courses with grades (DC) and (DD) if they obtain approval from department head and students advisor.
 
Graduation Requirements : Education period of the Agricultural Biotechnology Undergraduate Program is four years. Students unable to graduate within specified time period must complete their education total of seven years according to 44th article of the Legistlation number 2547. However, students unable to graduate from the enrolled program within a seven year period, an opportunity for two exams one of which is a make up exam are given to senior (fourth year) students for each course they are unseccessfull to pass. At the end of this period, students who failed 3 courses or less are granted limitless time to enter failed courses. Those who failed 5 courses could continue to take exams up to 3 to 4 semester. In order to graduate from the department, students must fulfill the requirements of the department and the university and must obtain minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) 2.00. Students who graduate within 4 years with GPA between 3.00-3.49 are awarded achievement certificate and with GPA between 3.50-4.00 are awarded outstanding achievement certificate.
 
Mode of Study (full-time, part-time, e-learning etc.) : A full-time educational program is conducted by the Department of Agricultural Biotechnology.  

Program Learning Outcomes
1 Students have basic information on matematics, chemistry, physics, biology and statistics.
2 Students acquire basic skills on computer programming, computer and internet applications.
3 Students gain detailed knowledge on the principles and concepts of cell biology, biochemistry, genetics, molecular genetics and biotechnology.
4 Students gain practical skills on tissue culture techniques, recombinant DNA techniques, molecular breeding and fermentation technologies.
5 Students comprehend biotechnological applications both with a technical and social perspective.
6 Students acquire independant research skills and also the ability to take part in group studies.
7 Students access the new developments in their area by using information technologies.
8 Students gain the ability to communucate with the society in their area of specialization.
9 Students are able to prepare and conduct studies in their area of expertise.
